This paper first investigates the multi-emotive ironic types, functions and dissociative thoughts produced by verbal irony interface with other figures of speech in the Qur’anic discourse and second examines the translational equivalence of this interface in line with Arberry’s translation. While Speech Acts Theory of Irony is used to categorize the data samples, Nakamura’s et al. Allusional Pretence Theory is used to analyse and interpret the data, theory of Equivalence is used to examine translational equivalence applied in transferring the emotive meanings from the original into English. The study shows that verbal irony interfaces with other figures of speech including parody, paradox, metonymy, satire, euphemism and pun. This thus produces many functions,i.e. social, psychological, socio/psycho-aggressive, theological etc. The study claims that translation of verbal irony interface with other speech acts of the Qur’an suffers from different linguistic issues. To accurately transfer this (meta)linguistic interface of the Qur’an, the study proposes that Post-Modifier Adjectival Translation Strategy along with Semantics Field Theory of Componential Analysis be taken into professional translators’ account in transferring the wide range of emotive meanings generated through verbal irony interface with other figures of speech. © 2020 World Communication Association.
