Gynocriticism secara etimologi adalah berasal daripada perkataan Perancis "la gynocritique". la satu teori yang khusus dirangka untuk digunakan bagi menerangkan dan menganalisis karya-karya tentang wanita yang dihasilkan oleh wanita. Ginokritik diperkenalkan oleh Showalter pada tahun 1979, dengan maksud berikut; Is the study of woman as writers - and its subjets are the the history, styles, themes, genres, and structures of writing by women; the psychodynamics of female creativity; the trajectory of the individual or collective female career; and the evolution and laws of a female literary tradition.
