PurposeThis study aims to develop a portable upscaled automated phase-controlled impact device (APCID) for industrial applications which allows impact synchronous modal analysis (ISMA), an operational modal analysis technique to be performed under actual operating condition with minimum no. of impacts.MethodsThe design of this upscaled APCID is validated by static and transient structural analysis for its stability and strength. Its performance is tested on an industrial water pump.ResultsThe lightweight and portable upscaled APCID design can impart large and constant impact forces, and it is found stable and safe. Field testing also showed good suppression of cyclic load component using ISMA with upscaled APCID as all modes identified in stationary condition of the pump were also identified in running condition of the pump.ConclusionThe upscaled APCID is a portable and practical device which allows in-service modal analysis with known input excitation to be performed efficiently on mechanical structures in industrial setups.
