Abstract

A new two-dimensional (2D) zinc (Zn)-based coordination polymer, denoted as UMMOF-1, with a framework composition {Zn(TBA)(mu-H2O)(H2O)2}n (where TBA = 4,4 `-(((1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-diyl)bis(sulfanediyl))bis (methylene))dibenzoate), was successfully synthesized at room temperature using the slow diffusion method. UMMOF-1 is the first Zn-MOF to exhibit a monodentate binding mode with the TBA ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis revealed that UMMOF-1 crystallized in a monoclinic crystal structure with the space group C12/c1. The structure consisting 1D inorganic chains interconnected into a 2D zigzag framework, was alternately packed along the b-axis. Interestingly, UMMOF-1 features has various uncoordinated functional groups, including O, S, and N, that are suitable for adsorption and catalytic applications. SC-XRD, PXRD, FESEM, TGA, and FT-IR are used to confirm the crystallinity, morphology, thermal stability, and the presence of various functional groups in the UMMOF-1. Furthermore, the stability of UMMOF-1 towards water exhibited remarkable adsorption capabilities for the methylene blue (MB) dye, a common water contaminant. UMMOF-1 demonstrates superior performance compared to its organic ligand (H2TBA), highlighting its potential for environmental remediation and wastewater treatment.
