Abstract

In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a combination of single mode fibre (SMF) with graded indexed multimode fibre (GIMF) to form an artificial saturable absorber. A SMF-GIMF-SMF structure is incorporated into Erbium-doped fibre laser (EDFL) system to induce mode-locking operation with very low threshold pump power of 41.6 mW. The highest pulse energy obtained is 406.65 pJ at pump power of 84.7 mW. With a relatively short GIMF used as artificial saturable absorber, high fundamental repetition rate with low threshold power is achieved. The proposed artificial saturable absorber is potentially to contribute to the development of sustainable industry, innovation, and infrastructure. © 2024 The Authors
