Surface tailoring of bioimplants is a prerequisite for reducing inflammation and improving durability. In this work, novel calcia stabilized zirconia (CaSZ) and silver-CaSZ nanocomposite coatings were developed on medical grade stainless steel (316L SS). We analyzed their microstructure, mechanical, biological and corrosion resistance performance. Ag-CaSZ nanocomposite coating effectively arrested Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial growth without compromising its biocompatibility. Hemolytic behavior was studied and the results confirmed that the samples expressed hemocompatible nature. Further, CaSZ and Ag-CaSZ nanocomposite coatings enhanced osteoblast-like cells (MG-63) adhesion with improved calcite precipitation (biomineralization) using Alizarin red-based assay (ARS). Finally, electrochemical bio-corrosion was performed with Artificial Blood Plasma (ABP) solution. The chemical inertness of ceramics and the formation of the passive layer could enhance corrosion resistance.
