Abstract
This study is concerned with the growth of the squatter problem in the Kelang valley, an area which includes Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Kelang, as a concomitant of industrial development. The emphasis of this study is on the involvement of migrant Malay female workers in the occupation of illegally built dwellings. The majority of the women workers are employed by multinational electronics firms which attempt to provide accommodation for only a limited number of the migrant workers. Left to fend for themselves, the workers usually solve their housing problem by crowding into squatter huts occupied by relatives of friends who migrated earlier to the Kelang valley.
