Abstract
This study reports the results of a survey conducted through questionnaires to investigate the usage of ICT learning tools by students of the preparatory education program of “Rancangan Persediaan Khas Jepun (RPKJ)” in Universiti Malaya, both during Japanese language and science-related subjects learning outside the classroom. In this study, we focused on the usage and purposes of smartphone apps and websites. The survey results revealed that many students use both apps and websites when learning Japanese, whereas there are fewer students who use them when studying science-related subjects. Additionally, it was found that during Japanese language learning, the use of “dictionary,” “translation,” “flashcard” apps and websites is prevalent, while during science-related subject learning, “video” apps particularly ‘YouTube’ and websites are more commonly used. Based on the survey results, we proposed creating app-based flashcards as one example of Japanese language learning support, which can be shared among Japanese language learners. As for the science-related subjects, we intend to share the results with the science teachers and aim to connect these results to provide learning support and improve teaching methods.
