Abstract

The generation of passive mode-locked pulses in a thulium-doped fluoride fiber laser (TDFF) through nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) was proposed and demonstrated. The proposed fiber laser was able to suppress spectral sidebands by controlling the polarization state using polarization controllers incorporated into the cavity. Mode-locked pulses were observed at 1492.6 nm with a 3-dB bandwidth region of 10 nm without any appearance of sidebands. The laser can generate output pulses with pulse widths of 370 fs, peak powers of 1.84 kW, and pulse energies of up to 0.68 nJ. The output pulses have a measured signal-to-noise ratio of 65 dB, indicating good stability when observed over 2 h with no significant wavelength drift or degradation. Furthermore, the proposed design allows for dispersive waves to be successfully filtered out using the NPR effect, making it a highly viable design for generating short mode-locked pulses with high peak powers in the S-band region.
