Abstract

Nowadays, the pedestrian bridge is design and build to increase the safety awareness for the public to crossing roadways without disturbing the vehicular traffic. However, the failure of a pedestrian bridge for the recent year such as at the Florida International University tragedy make people think twice to use the footbridge because of their doubtful. Therefore, this study is to convince the people that the existing pedestrian bridges are safe to be used by investigated their dynamic performance. To achieve this objective, finite element model of an existing steel pedestrian bridge was developed using commercial software through the modal analysis application. The developed finite element model was validated by having identical dynamic properties with those determined from theory and it also lies in the safe range of design standard code. Hence, this study provided the authority management to have their infrastructure database which can be used in their structural monitoring and maintenance work before any intervention is undertaken.
