A survey of surgical biopsy material from carcinoma of the stomach, colon, and rectum in Malaya with its multiracial population was carried out. The difficulty of interpretation of local frequency figures, owing to differences in rates of hospital utilization in the various races, is discussed. The frequency of occurrence of carcinoma of the stomach would seem to be the same for all three races, Chinese, Indian, and Malay. Carcinoma of the colon and rectum are not the uncommon diseases they had previously been thought to be in the region. The incidence of carcinoma of the colon and rectum is lower in Indians compared with the Chinese and Malays. Copyright © 1971 British Journal of Surgery Society Ltd.
