Nanotechnology has emerged as a transformative force in drug formulation and targeted delivery, particularly for various pharmaceutical agents. This study focuses on the development and characterization of a lipid nanocarrier, specifically niosomes, encapsulating Brucea javanica (BJ) extract, aimed at treating type 2 diabetes. Niosomes were prepared using a modified ethanol injection method, employing different types of Tween nonionic surfactants, alongside glycolipids. Comprehensive characterization of the BJ extract-loaded niosomes was conducted, evaluating particle size, stability, encapsulation efficiency (EE %), morphology, and in vitro drug release. The formulations exhibited favourable physicochemical properties, with particle sizes between 150 nm and 200 nm, a low polydispersity index ranging from 0.073 to 0.189, and optimal encapsulation efficiency, particularly with Tween 20 as a co-surfactant. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the niosomes were uniformly spherical in shape. Stability assessments confirmed the robustness of the nanocarriers, showcasing minimal fluctuations in particle size and low aggregation rates. Additionally, in vitro release studies indicated a sustained release profile, suggesting enhanced bioavailability of the encapsulated BJ extract. These findings underscore the potential of lipid nanocarriers loaded with BJ extract as a novel therapeutic approach for managing type 2 diabetes, warranting further clinical exploration.
