Abstract

Melons, a highly valued fruit crop, are susceptible to over 40 viruses, mainly belonging to Geminiviradae and Potyviridae. Effective crop protection requires early detection. This review covers recent progress in monitoring and detection methods, encompassing phenotypic, molecular and serological techniques for the detection and identification of viral diseases of melons. PCR-based and ELISA detection methods are widely used for melon. Advanced molecular technology, such as isothermal PCR and CRISPR/Cas systems, has shown great potential to accurately detect viruses even at low concentrations. Additionally, high-throughput sequencing is an innovative technique for identifying unexpected or emerging pathogens, capable of detecting multiple nucleic acids present in infected plants. Recent progress in phenotypical methods using optical remote sensing and machine learning presents significant promise for the non-destructive detection of viruses in melon. Additionally, the advent of new portable devices providing real-time analysis in a short time period is likely to be valuable for in-field detection. The current advancements and application of these methods in plant viral disease monitoring and detection and their potential constraints are discussed.
