Abstract

Boost type switched-capacitor inverter topologies are highly suitable for photovoltaic based distributed power generation and electric vehicle applications. This brief proposes a new single-stage boost type inverter topology with features of self-voltage balancing capability of floating capacitors (FCs), seven-level (7L) stepped output voltage generation with peak output voltage three times higher than the input voltage. The modes of operation are discussed in detail emphasizing the self-voltage balancing. Further, the proposed topology uses less number of semiconductor devices. A detailed comparison with other recent 7L inverter topologies is presented to attest to the merits of the proposed topology concerning a reduced number of components. Finally, a laboratory prototype is employed to validate the proposed topology's operability, and the obtained experimental results are presented.
